3x the Price, 1/3 the Sales
End of 2007 sales numbers are out for the gaming platforms and the results are not a big shock. 3.63 millions Wii's were sold, while "only" 1.21 million PS3's were purchased.
Does it have to do with the price? IMHO it does. But, does the data agree with my opinion? Actually, not really!
So, when it was clear to Sony that they weren't selling many PS3's, they dedicded on a dramatic price cut. And the result was in the all-important sales from the end of Novemeber through December. During that time 232,000 PS3s sold while 774,000 Wii's sold. That's still a 3x outsell. So, maybe price didn't have that much to do with things...
So, then, what is the reason for the lack of sales? I still think crazy high cost has a big effect, even if the price reduction didn't make much of a dent. Though it made a couple gamers I know buy one now that it's cheaper. The only other reason I can think of is the lack of great new and fun games. What games the platform has, and how fun they are to play.
At the Tokyo Game Show last year I played a HUGE variety of games on the PS3 - just about every demo there, and I have to say, it wasn't all that impressive - except one game - Gran Turismo 5. Harlyn disagrees with me, but I think GT5 will kick PS3 sales up to a respectable level. There are a lot of mediocre games for the PS3, so having an awesome game will definitely help. How much will it help? Only time will tell.
