Wii Shortage until 2009!?
According to the opinion of IDC research analyst Billy Pidgeon, there will be a Wii shortage until 2009. He comes to this conclusion based on the fact that the Wii's are still selling out. Of course they're still selling out, they're awesome.
The reason I don't think we'll have shortages that long is based on my own "economic indicators" - eBay and Craig's List. When theWii first came out, it was tough to find them for under 500 bucks, then after Christmas it was down under 350, and now on eBay most are selling for about 300(depending on options and packages, of course). What does this show? It shows that the people that HAD TO HAVE a Wii got one already. And the demand has come to within $50 of retail purchase.
So, MY opinion, is that Wii's will stay on shelves longer than a few minutes by the end of summer. I was at Costco this weekend, and it took nearly an hour for the Wii palette to be emptied. And I was also able to finally get all my extra wiimotes and nunchucks a few months ago. I think Nintendo is making them as fast as they can, and if demand stays this high, they'll open more manufacturing facilities. Nintendo is smart enough to not keep everyone waiting.
However, next to the Wii's there was a nearly full palette of PS3's. But most people looked at the $699 price tag and kept walking...
